Exploring HaikuOS

May 2022

I recalled reading articles about BeOS some years back and tried to search for info on it on the net. Wikipedia has an article about BeOS. Found out that it is no longer developed but is still represented by the closely related HaikuOS. I installed HaikuOS on a virtual disk to give it an try. To be classed as beta software, it seems quite polished. Although it is a bit different it is not difficult to grasp the flow. One thing I like is the Stack&Tile function of the window manager. This gives you the ability to link windows into a group that can be moved and resized as one. Not sure I would install HaikuOS on hardware for daily use since it is still considered beta software but I will explore it more as time allows.

The original BeOS is still available at ArchiveOS.

Exploring HaikuOS Update 1

December 2022

Haiku-OS released their r1 beta 4 version. To update from r1 beta 3 I followed the instructions at Get Haiku by clicking the "HAIKU Download It Now" button centered on the Home Page. Just run two commands to change the repositories, wait for files to download, then run pkgman full-sync wait for installation to finish and reboot. Update completed with no problems.
